Six Taoist Arts

Ritual Picture

Ritual

The Art of Ritual, which also correlates with Meditation, represents the reverent observation of the laws and forces of nature.

"Lotus philosophy is essential achievement. Life can be beautiful and meaningful - studying the Lotus can help one to be a good person. Taoists and Buddhists studied the Lotus and adopted its philosophy in a ritualistic manner. They have used the lotus as a meditation symbol for thousands of years." ---Dr. Chang, July 20, 1997

"In actual ritual, we concentrate mind with regular sequence procedure. During a treatment, before inserting a needle, we calm ourselves with thoughts about the goal of healing." ---Student, Fall 1999

Music

The Art of Music relates to how one perceives the divine harmony of the universe. It also relates to the power of regulating energy frequencies, timing, and rhythm.

"Music is perhaps the most universal language of yin and yang, as it reminds us of the balance of two entities. Like the Tai Chi symbol, the most essential shape is the wave connecting the beginning and the end. Music is also the movement of making the mind flow harmoniously. The inner mind, or spirit, flows like music with a balance of yin and yang, and our qi flows like music." ---Student, Fall 1999

Archery

The Art of Archery refers to the martial art of yielding to achieve a return. It also pertains to the focus and concentration of power when storing and releasing energy.

"If one relates the needle to an arrow, the target of an arrow in flight is similar to an acupuncture point on the body. If one relates a treatment to an arrow, the target represents the perfect treatment for the patient." ---Student, Fall 1999

Charioteering

The Art of Charioteering symbolizes the discipline and cultivation of the mind, body, and spirit. It also relates to the ability to harness, control, and direct chi.

Writing

The Art of Writing represents refinement in calligraphy, charms, and the classical studies. It can also pertain to one's clarity of expression.

"Writing calligraphy is like the smooth movement of a dance. Similarly, manipulating a needle is like using a calligraphy brush, a dance of sorts." ---Student, Fall 1999

Mathematics

The Art of Mathematics refers to mystical calculations and divination used to influence and interpret patterns of nature.

"The Walking Salutation gives me the ability to begin to understand the complex mathematics in my body." ---Student, Spring 2000

Song of Discovering the Taoist Disciple

Discuss strategies with him to observe his intelligence and judgment;
Debate with him to know his temperament and tolerance;
Efforts in study and learning show his initiative;
Practicing what has been learned shows diligence and dedication;
Humility shows his maturity and wisdom;
Assign him work and discover his competence;
Cooperation and willingness show sincerity;
See him handle money to know his virtue;
Tell him of difficulties and hardship ahead, then know his courage;
Working with others, he reveals his selflessness and leadership;
In misfortune and danger, learn of his true loyalty and friendship.
His achievements reveal his real self discipline.
